I don’t know about you, but hot chocolate is my favorite hot drink to have during the holidays. It’s perfect because the whole family can enjoy it!
Every year I make everyone in my family a travel mug of homemade hot chocolate and a bag of homemade pop corn. We load everyone up in our van and drive around looking for Christmas lights around town or drive to a couple towns over and drive through their drive thru Christmas lights display. It’s such a simple but fun thing we do, but it’s definitely become a yearly tradition that we all cherish so dearly.
Tools You’ll Need
- measuring cups
- food processor or blender
- whisk
- glass container
- labels (optional)
How to Make Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix
Ingredients

- 3 c. dry milk
- 1 c. cocoa powder (unsweetened)
- 1 1/4 c. sugar
- a pinch of salt
- 1/2 c. mini chocolate chips (I used semi sweet)
Directions

In a food processor with a blade attachment, add dry milk, sugar, cocoa powder and salt. Blend until mixed together and becomes powdery like the stuff from the store.
This step is important if you want to make sure your mix doesn’t become lumpy or grainy when you add the hot water.
I blended my hot chocolate mix for about 3 minutes.

This is what the hot chocolate mix will look like after being blended up in the food processor.

Add your hot chocolate mix to a glass container that has a lid.
I use a pretty big jar because I like to make multiple batches while I have everything out and everything is already a mess.

Add 1/2 cup of mini chocolate chips to the hot chocolate mix and whisk it in.

Your homemade hot chocolate mix will look like this when you’re done. Yep! That simple!
I store mine with a 1/4 cup measure as a scoop at all time.
This will last about a year in a jar with a tight lid. That doesn’t really happen around here though. Haha!
How to Make Homemade Hot Chocolate

In a large mug, add 1/4 cup of homemade hot chocolate mix, then pour in hot water.
The ratio I use is 1/4 cup of homemade hot chocolate mix to 8 oz of water.

Stir to combine. Make sure you’re scraping the bottom of your mug for the melted chocolate chip pieces.

Once everything is combined, add your favorite toppings.
